Welcome to the September Carnival of Natural Parenting: We’re all home schoolers
This post was written for inclusion in the monthly Carnival of Natural Parenting hosted by Hobo Mama and Code Name: Mama. This month our participants have shared how their children learn at home as a natural part of their day. Please read to the end to find a list of links to the other carnival participants.
*****
I am learning all the time. The tombstone will be my diploma. – Eartha Kitt
Every day is a school day in my home. OK, so not all of the lessons are “educational,” but they are lessons all the same.
Some days we’re learning how to make granola bars, other days we’re learning that wasps are more aggressive than bees and hurt more when they sting. Most days, however, we’re just learning what it means to be a part of the world. We ask questions, and look up the answers. We surround ourselves with books and spend hours sunk into them reading. Science, history, it’s all somewhere in a book.
The kids learn about health when we crowd into the kitchen and cook supper, a thousand “what’s this” and “will this make me stronger” questions cover the foods we eat.
We stay out late and watch fireflies, talk about how they shine, whisper into the dark the beauty of a simple insect.
The boys catch lizards, salamanders, and assorted critters that they bring in to ask me a thousand questions about.
We learn that not everyone is nice, some can be cruel for no apparent reason, and that walking away is the best choice. We learn to watch our words, to ask politely, to speak the way we would like to be spoken to.
Every day is a school day, and we make the most of each and every one of them. Life is a giant classroom, one that can never be duplicated on a smaller level.

Very nice blog, Summer.
Your days sound an awful lot like our days. And I agree, learning is learning, whether it happens at 10 on a Monday morning, or 11 on a Saturday night.
Love that Eartha Kitt quote!

Beautiful post
just lovely and so encouraging. It shows me we don’t have to have a special setup to be succesfull homeschoolers, we just need to be conscious of and available too our children.
