Crap. I’m One Of Those “Radical Homemakers”, Aren’t I?

Radical homemakers. You either want to be one, or hate their guts and think they’re just out to make you look bad.

And though I am not, nor have I ever been, upper-middle class (Heck, we just recently hit middle class. Woo-hoo! No more poverty line!) I guess I could be lumped in with the women who decided that having it all meant a vegetable garden and a sewing machine. Sure, we get kicked around by those who think we’re enslaving ourselves, but that’s OK. I know stuck behind a desk for 8+ hours a day would be the real torture for me. So there.

Wednesday I cooked a big batch of raspberries, canned them, and waited. Thursday we cracked open one jar for a taste, and nearly ate half the thing on toast in one go. Very yummy, and surprisingly not as sweet as I feared they’d be considering how much sugar the recipe called for.

Since that was so successful, and easy, I decided to give spaghetti sauce a try. A little more work, and a lot longer cooking time. But not too bad really. And I got all of these out of it.

So there you go. I’m now growing vegetables, and canning them. And I liked it!

I am not an RH, but strive to live vicariously through the blogs of women who are living it. When my girls were little I was closer to radical than I am now. I’m still one of those evil liberals, shun organized church, distrust government, and believe in peak oil and climate change.

    Your jam looks yummy. =)

    Canning is awesome.

I am totally willing to enslave myself if (1) it’s of my own free choice, (2) I get to live a better, more sustainable lifestyle and (3) I get awesome homemade jam out of it. Somehow, it doesn’t feel like enslavement at all. Like you said, the real enslavement would be 40+ hours a week in a depressing cubicle if you don’t feel you have a choice about that.
